Description
Anteriorly, the temporal bone presents the squamous part as a broad, thin plate contributing to the lateral wall of the cranial vault, with the zygomatic process projecting anterolaterally to meet the zygomatic bone at the zygomaticotemporal suture. Inferior to the squama, the mandibular fossa and articular tubercle lie on the external surface, positioned to receive the mandibular condyle and guide temporomandibular joint (TMJ) motion. Medially, the petrous part would deepen toward the middle cranial fossa, while the tympanic part rims the external acoustic meatus. Orientation matters. Clinically, the anterior root of the zygomatic process and the articular eminence form hard bony landmarks in TMJ assessment, where degenerative change, ankylosis, or post-traumatic remodeling can alter condylar translation and produce pain with chewing. This projection also anchors the zygomatic arch, a common route for surgical access to the infratemporal fossa and middle cranial base, and a frequent site of fracture with facial trauma that can restrict mandibular excursion. An anterior view clarifies how the temporal component of the arch sits superior to the mandibular ramus and lateral to the cranial base, relationships that can be hard to parse on cross-sectional imaging without a solid 3D mental model. Use this plate in head and neck anatomy teaching to introduce the TMJ, zygomatic arch, and temporal bone subdivisions, or in maxillofacial and otologic publications where precise bony landmarks support discussions of fracture patterns, arthroplasty planning, or surgical corridors.
