Description
Seen in lateral profile, the temporal bone dominates the side of the skull with its squamous part forming a thin, broad plate superior to the external acoustic meatus. The zygomatic process projects anteriorly to meet the zygomatic bone, while the mastoid process sits posteroinferior to the meatus and the styloid process descends anteroinferiorly. Along the temporal region, the temporal bone articulates anteriorly with the greater wing of the sphenoid at the sphenosquamosal suture, with the sphenoid contributing to the cranial base just deep to the temple. Landmarks matter. A true lateral perspective helps orient relationships that are easy to lose in basal views, including the external auditory canal relative to the temporomandibular joint and the mastoid air cell region posteriorly. Otologic surgery often navigates from the surface landmarks of the suprameatal triangle and mastoid cortex toward the antrum and middle ear, and an accurate surface map reduces surprises around the facial nerve canal and sigmoid sinus lying deep and posterior. Fracture patterns through the temporal squama and petrous part also correlate with hearing loss, cerebrospinal fluid otorrhea, and carotid canal involvement, so the temporal-sphenoid junction is not academic.
