Description
Inferior to the cranial cavity, the temporal bone is oriented to emphasize the petrous and mastoid regions with the styloid process projecting anteroinferiorly as a narrow spike just medial to the bulky mastoid process. Laterally, the external acoustic meatus sits posterior to the mandibular fossa and articular tubercle, defining the temporomandibular joint surface anteriorly and the mastoid air cell region posteriorly. Medial to the mandibular fossa, the carotid canal and jugular fossa occupy the basal surface of the petrous part, with the stylomastoid foramen positioned between the styloid and mastoid processes. Small landmarks matter here. An inferior temporal bone view helps you map the exit points and grooves that guide neurovascular structures at the skull base. The stylomastoid foramen is the key landmark for the facial nerve as it leaves the temporal bone, a relationship surgeons respect during parotidectomy and mastoid surgery, and radiologists correlate when evaluating facial palsy, cholesteatoma, or temporal bone fracture patterns.
