Description

Positioned on the lateral cranial wall, the os temporale is highlighted against the surrounding viscerocranium and neurocranium, with its squamous part lying inferior to the parietal bone and anterior to the occipital bone along the parietomastoid and occipitomastoid sutures. The external acoustic meatus opens laterally within the tympanic part, while the mastoid process projects posteroinferiorly behind the meatus. Anteriorly, the temporal bone approaches the zygomatic region and the temporomandibular joint area, placing it immediately superior and posterior to the mandibular fossa region in this profile view. Clinically, a lateral temporal bone view is the fastest way to orient learners to the external landmarks that guide otologic examination and surgical planning. The mastoid process and the bony external auditory canal serve as surface proxies for the underlying mastoid air cell system and middle ear, key anatomy when discussing acute mastoiditis, cholesteatoma pathways, or mastoidectomy corridors. Fracture patterns also map well here: squamous temporal impacts often track toward the petrous part, where injury can involve the facial nerve canal and the osseous labyrinth. A tight neighborhood. Suitable for head and neck anatomy teaching, ENT and neurosurgery lectures, and radiology correlation when introducing temporal bone CT planes by relating axial stacks back to palpable lateral landmarks.
