Description
Mastoid process of the temporal bone dominates this lateral skull view as a conical projection positioned posteroinferior to the external acoustic meatus and posterior to the zygomatic process. Its roughened lateral surface contrasts with the smoother squamous temporal region anteriorly, while the mastoid notch (digastric fossa) is identifiable along the medial-inferior aspect for attachment of the posterior belly of the digastric muscle. Along the posterior margin, the occipitomastoid suture outlines the junction with the occipital bone, and a small mastoid foramen may be present near the suture line. A palpable landmark. Clinically, the mastoid is the surgical gateway to the air cell system that communicates with the middle ear, so understanding its external topography helps correlate otitis media complications with mastoiditis and subperiosteal abscess formation behind the auricle. The lateral perspective supports teaching of cortical mastoidectomy planning by orienting the surgeon to the external acoustic meatus as an anterior reference and to the mastoid tip as an inferior limit, while reminding the viewer that deeper structures, including the sigmoid sinus posteriorly and the facial nerve within the temporal bone, lie immediately deep to the cortex. Surface attachments also matter, since the sternocleidomastoid inserts on the mastoid process and can transmit pain or tenderness during local infection or after temporal bone trauma.
