Description
Oriented in an inferior (norma basalis) view, the paired os temporale is highlighted along the lateral skull base, framing the occipital bone posteriorly and meeting the sphenoid and zygomatic bones anteriorly at the root of the zygomatic arch. The mastoid process projects posteroinferiorly, while the styloid process descends as a slender spike anteromedial to the mastoid. Medially, the petrous part forms a dense ridge toward the midline, positioned lateral to the foramen magnum and adjacent to the occipitomastoid and temporozygomatic sutures. Clear landmarks. Clinically, this angle is the one surgeons and trainees use to reconcile external bony landmarks with the neurovascular corridors of the temporal bone. The styloid process and its relationship to the skull base matters in Eagle syndrome, where an elongated styloid or ossified stylohyoid ligament can irritate adjacent structures, including the glossopharyngeal nerve or internal carotid artery. The mastoid tip and petrous temporal also anchor discussions of mastoidectomy corridors, the course of the facial nerve within the temporal bone, and the proximity of jugular and carotid foramina at the petro-occipital region. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and head and neck modules to teach skull base orientation, sutural boundaries, and the spatial logic of the mastoid and styloid processes relative to the foramen magnum and zygomatic arch. It also fits well in operative anatomy handouts for otolaryngology and neurosurgery, or as a labeled plate in radiology teaching when correlating inferior skull base landmarks with CT bone windows.
