Description
Atrium (trigone) of the lateral ventricle occupies the posterior part of the ventricular body where the cavity broadens before continuing inferiorly as the temporal horn and posteriorly as the occipital horn. From a superior perspective, the atrium sits lateral to the midline ventricular system, with its medial wall related to the splenium region and adjacent midline structures, while the roof and lateral wall follow the deep surface of parietal and occipital white matter. The junctional geometry is the point: a widened chamber with two horn origins diverging away from the atrial cavity. Orientation is immediate. Clinically, the atrium matters because it is a common site of choroid plexus prominence and calcification, findings that must be distinguished from intraventricular hemorrhage or atrial masses on CT and MRI. Its caliber is also scrutinized in hydrocephalus and in fetal sonography, where atrial width measurement helps evaluate ventriculomegaly.
