Description
Body of the lateral ventricle occupies the central part of the cerebral hemisphere, extending anteroposteriorly beneath the corpus callosum within the parietal lobe. From this lateral perspective, the ventricular cavity sits medial to the overlying parietal white matter, with the callosal body forming the superior roof and the septum pellucidum and fornix defining the medial boundary toward the midline. Inferiorly, the floor relates to the dorsal thalamus and the body of the caudate nucleus along the striothalamic groove, an anatomic corridor that helps orient the ventricle’s long horizontal profile. Cerebrospinal fluid space dominates the field. Enlargement of the lateral ventricles is a first-pass sign in obstructive hydrocephalus, normal pressure hydrocephalus, and cerebral atrophy, and the body segment is often where volume change is easiest to appreciate against the stable arc of the corpus callosum. A lateral view emphasizes the superior-inferior relationship between the callosal roof and thalamic floor, which matters when localizing periventricular lesions such as demyelinating plaques, ependymitis, or intraventricular hemorrhage that may layer dependently within the cavity. The ventricular body’s position relative to the caudate and thalamus also supports teaching of basal ganglia and diencephalic topography, where small shifts in anatomy can have large implications for interpretation of CT and MRI. Neuroanatomy courses commonly pair this illustration with coronal sections to reinforce the continuity between the interventricular foramen (of Monro), the ventricular body, and the atrium (trigone) without losing left-right orientation.
