Description
Arising from the ileocolic artery, the anterior cecal artery courses on the anterior surface of the cecum, sending small branches into the cecal wall along the haustral contour and near the taeniae coli. Anteriorly, its arterial arcades lie superficial to the circular muscle layer and mucosa it supplies, while companion venous channels track nearby and drain toward the superior mesenteric venous system. Lateral fat pads and small ileocolic lymph nodes typically sit along the mesenteric border, framing the vessel as it approaches the pouch-like cecum. Color coding distinguishes arteries from veins, and fine neural strands are shown paralleling the vessels. Appreciating this anterior perspective matters when teaching segmental blood supply of the right colon and why ischemia or focal bleeding can localize to the cecum even when the rest of the colon appears intact. Appendectomy and ileocecal resections often require mobilization in a plane where ileocolic branches are at risk, and the anterior cecal artery can be injured during mesenteric division or clipped inadvertently when the appendix lies in an anterior position. Small vessel caliber does not mean small consequences. Inflammation in acute appendicitis can also obscure these branches, so an oriented vascular map helps explain operative bleeding points and postoperative hematoma patterns.
