Description
Seen from an anterior perspective of the male upper limb, the paired brachial veins (venae comitantes) ascend in the medial bicipital groove, closely applied to the brachial artery and linked by frequent transverse communicating branches. Proximally, they approach the inferior border of teres major where the venous channels converge toward the axillary vein, while distally they receive tributaries from the deep forearm veins near the cubital fossa. Surrounding landmarks include the deltoid laterally at the shoulder, biceps brachii superficial and anterior, and brachialis deep to the biceps. Major peripheral nerves course in the same corridor, with the median nerve tracking anterior to the artery and the ulnar nerve passing medially toward the posterior compartment. For teaching venous anatomy, this anterior arrangement matters because the brachial veins are the principal deep venous drainage of the arm and their tight relationship to the brachial artery sets the pattern for duplex ultrasound identification. They are also the vessels involved in upper extremity deep venous thrombosis associated with peripherally inserted central catheters and repetitive overhead activity, and their proximal continuity with the axillary vein guides how thrombus propagation and embolic risk are assessed.
