Description
Anterior thoracic anatomy is rendered with a transparent overlay, placing the trachea in the midline as it descends into the superior mediastinum and bifurcates at the carina into right and left main bronchi. The right lung lies more lateral and slightly inferior, separated into superior, middle, and inferior lobes by the horizontal and oblique fissures, while the left lung shows superior and inferior lobes divided by an oblique fissure. Medially, the left lung’s anterior border forms the cardiac notch, with the lingula projecting inferior to that notch along the anteromedial aspect of the superior lobe. The rib cage frames the lungs anteriorly and laterally, with vertebral elements faintly visible posteriorly to anchor orientation. For teaching surface anatomy and clinical correlation, this frontal perspective makes the left cardiac impression and notch easy to appreciate, a common point of confusion when learners expect symmetric anterior lung margins. It also supports discussions of airway access and bronchial anatomy: the right main bronchus courses more vertically than the left, a relationship that explains why aspirated foreign bodies and endobronchial intubation more often involve the right bronchial tree.
