Across the anterior thorax, the right and left lungs sit lateral to the mediastinum, their apices projecting superiorly toward the thoracic inlet and their bases resting on the diaphragm. The trachea descends in the midline with clearly indicated tracheal rings, then approaches the level of the carina to continue as the main bronchi, which course inferolaterally toward each hilum. On the right, the horizontal fissure separates the superior from the middle lobe and meets the oblique fissure, while the left lung shows a single oblique fissure dividing superior and inferior lobes.
