Description
Running along the anteromedial forearm in anatomical position, the paired ulnar veins (venae comitantes) flank the ulnar artery and course adjacent to the ulna, receiving small venules from the deep palmar and forearm plexuses. Proximally they ascend toward the cubital fossa, while the radius remains lateral and the ulna defines the medial border of the forearm; the humerus is visible superiorly with the elbow bridging arm and forearm. Distally, the vascular channels relate to the carpal region and metacarpals as they converge from the hand. Understanding the ulnar veins from an anterior perspective matters because these deep collecting channels are routinely encountered during vascular access planning, trauma assessment, and surgical exposure of the medial forearm. Their close relationship to the ulnar artery clarifies why arterial injury, pseudoaneurysm, or iatrogenic cannulation can compromise paired venous return and complicate hemostasis in lacerations along the ulnar (medial) border. This is a high-risk corridor. Educators can drop this plate into upper-limb anatomy labs, vascular teaching sessions, and exam-prep materials to contrast deep venae comitantes with the superficial venous pattern, and to reinforce orientation of ulna versus radius in anterior view.
