Description
Positioned at the superomedial poles of the kidneys, the right and left suprarenal (adrenal) glands sit like caps, with the right gland typically more triangular and the left more semilunar in contour when compared side by side. From an anterior perspective, the abdominal aorta runs slightly left of midline and the inferior vena cava lies to its right, framing the retroperitoneal organs and clarifying the medial relationships of each gland. Renal arteries branch laterally from the aorta toward the renal hila, while renal veins course medially to drain into the inferior vena cava. Fine green elements suggest accompanying autonomic nerves and lymphatic channels tracking along the great vessels and renal pedicles. This view matters because adrenal surgery is vascular and unforgiving. The adrenal glands receive multiple small arterial branches, but each drains through a single dominant adrenal vein, the right adrenal vein typically entering the inferior vena cava directly while the left adrenal vein commonly joins the left renal vein, anatomy that drives clamp strategy and bleeding risk during adrenalectomy. Seeing the glands in context with the aorta, inferior vena cava, and renal vessels also supports cross sectional interpretation of adrenal masses, including adenoma, pheochromocytoma, and metastatic disease, where vascular proximity influences both radiologic staging and operative planning.
