Description
Centered in anterior orientation, the C6 vertebra presents a broad vertebral body inferior to the uncovertebral margins and superior to the anterior surface that will face the prevertebral fascia. Laterally, each transverse process projects to either side, and the anterior tubercle is enlarged into the carotid tubercle (Chassaignac tubercle), positioned anterolateral to the body and anterior to the transverse foramen. Posterior elements sit deeper from this viewpoint, with the vertebral arch and spinous process largely obscured behind the body. Landmarks read cleanly from medial to lateral. C6 matters because its anterior tubercle is a palpable bony stop used to compress the common carotid artery against the transverse process in the lower neck, and it also serves as a surgical landmark when developing the interval between the carotid sheath and the visceral compartment during an anterior cervical approach. It is also the level at which the recurrent laryngeal nerve, longus colli, and sympathetic chain become relevant neighbors during exposure, so a precise mental map of the transverse process and tubercles helps reduce traction and misplacement during instrumentation. Small bone, big consequences.
