Description
Centered in an anterior perspective, the eleventh thoracic vertebra (T11) is presented with its vertebral body prominent and broader than the more cranial thoracic levels, reflecting the transition toward the load-bearing morphology seen at the thoracolumbar junction. The superior and inferior endplates bracket the intervertebral disc spaces, and the lateral margins of the body lead to the pedicles at the vertebral waist. Costal demifacets for the head of rib 11 are expected at the posterolateral edges of the body, while the vertebral foramen, laminae, and spinous process sit posteriorly and are largely recessed from this anterior line of sight. Clear orientation cues make left and right easy to maintain. T11 matters because it sits at a mechanical and clinical crossroads: thoracic kyphosis gives way to lumbar lordosis, and segmental stiffness transitions to mobility, concentrating stress across T11–T12 and T12–L1. Compression fractures at the thoracolumbar junction are common after axial load injuries, and the wedge pattern is judged by anterior vertebral body height loss against the intact posterior wall. This view also supports teaching of anterior column anatomy used in Denis three-column concepts and preoperative planning for anterior approaches where the vertebral body and disc spaces are the operative targets.
