Description
Running along the lateral forearm beneath a semi-transparent skin layer, the extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL) is highlighted from its proximal origin on the lateral supracondylar ridge of the humerus to its distal tendon as it crosses the dorsal aspect of the wrist toward the base of the second metacarpal. The radius lies lateral to the ulna in anatomical position, framing the muscle belly as it descends anterolaterally toward the radial styloid region, with the elbow articulation between humerus, radius, and ulna clearly defined. Carpal bones, metacarpals, and phalanges provide distal landmarks for the tendon’s line of pull. Long. Lean. Obvious. Because ECRL is a posterior compartment muscle that becomes a conspicuous lateral border in an anterior forearm view, this perspective clarifies a common point of confusion in teaching: function follows its dorsal wrist passage, even when the muscle belly reads as anterolateral in surface anatomy.
