Description

Running along the lateral (radial) border of the posterior forearm, the extensor carpi radialis longus arises from the distal lateral supracondylar ridge of the humerus and descends superficial to the radial shaft before narrowing into a long tendon toward the dorsum of the wrist. Distally, its tendon passes deep to the extensor retinaculum within the second dorsal compartment, traveling alongside extensor carpi radialis brevis and remaining lateral to extensor digitorum as it crosses the radiocarpal joint. The radius and ulna frame the muscle belly medially and laterally, while the carpal and metacarpal bones provide clear distal landmarks for its insertion on the base of the second metacarpal.
