Description
Centered in the right upper quadrant beneath the costal margin, the gallbladder (vesica biliaris) lies on the visceral surface of the liver, with its fundus projecting anteriorly and inferiorly relative to the hepatic parenchyma. From the neck, the cystic duct courses posteromedially to join the common hepatic duct and form the common bile duct, which descends toward the second part of the duodenum. An anterior torso rendering also places the gallbladder in context with the stomach and proximal small intestine, while superficial lymphatic vessels and regional lymph nodes overlay the abdominal wall in semi-transparency. Orientation is clear. For teaching biliary anatomy, this anterior view helps clarify why pain from cholecystitis localizes to the epigastrium or right hypochondrium and may refer to the right shoulder via diaphragmatic irritation. The cystic duct relationship is a useful lead-in to Calot’s triangle (hepatocystic triangle) and the risk of iatrogenic common bile duct injury during laparoscopic cholecystectomy, where ductal misidentification remains the major technical pitfall. In an elderly male, the same pathway frames obstructive jaundice scenarios, including choledocholithiasis and malignant obstruction near the pancreatic head, where bile duct caliber and downstream drainage become the focus.
