Description
Anterior torso anatomy centers on the paired rectus abdominis muscles running vertically from the pubic crest and pubic symphysis inferiorly to the xiphoid process and costal cartilages of ribs 5 to 7 superiorly. A tendinous intersection pattern segments the muscle bellies into the familiar six pack appearance, while the linea alba forms a distinct midline raphe separating left from right. Laterally, the rectus margins are bounded by the linea semilunaris, with the costal margin superior and the iliac crests and anterior superior iliac spines framing the inferior-lateral abdomen. Superficial bony landmarks such as the sternum, ribs, and pelvis provide orientation. For teaching and clinical correlation, this anterior view clarifies how rectus fibers and their aponeurotic sheath contribute to the anterior abdominal wall and to force transmission across the midline. Diastasis recti presents as widening of the linea alba, most often evaluated by palpation in the supine patient during a partial sit-up, and it differs from a true ventral hernia in that no fascial defect is present.
