Description
Presented in anterior (palmar) orientation, the hand and wrist are rendered with a transparent overlay that aligns the skin surface to the underlying osteology in an African adult male. The distal radius lies lateral (thumb side) to the distal ulna, articulating with the proximal carpal row formed by the scaphoid and lunate, with the triquetrum and pisiform positioned more ulnarly. Distal to the carpus, five metacarpals project into the palm, and each digit contains proximal, middle, and distal phalanges except the thumb, which has only proximal and distal phalanges. Anterior hand osteology is the reference for surface palpation and for understanding common fracture patterns at the wrist and metacarpals, where small changes in alignment alter grip mechanics and tendon excursion. Scaphoid fractures after a fall on an outstretched hand often present with snuffbox tenderness even though the scaphoid itself is better appreciated from the radial aspect, and this view helps correlate that clinical finding with the bone’s proximal position adjacent to the distal radius. Clear depiction of the distal radius and ulna also supports teaching of distal radioulnar joint relationships, a frequent site of pain and instability after wrist trauma. Use this asset in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal modules when introducing the carpus, metacarpus, and phalanges, or in radiology and orthopedics content when orienting learners to PA hand and wrist projections. It also reads well in patient-facing education for metacarpal neck fractures (boxer’s fracture) and phalangeal injuries, where an under-skin skeletal overlay speeds comprehension.
