Description
Bisecting the face in a half anterior view, the left hemiface is dissected to expose the facial musculature overlying the maxilla and zygomatic bone, while the contralateral side remains implied for symmetry. Around the orbit, the orbicularis oculi encircles the palpebral fissure, with adjacent slips of the levator labii superioris and the zygomaticus minor running inferomedially toward the upper lip, and the zygomaticus major coursing from the zygomatic bone to the modiolus lateral to the oral commissure. Inferiorly, the orbicularis oris forms the muscular sphincter of the mouth, and in the anterior neck the sternocleidomastoid stands out as a superficial strap extending obliquely from the mastoid process to the manubrium and medial clavicle, framing the midline region over the cervical vertebrae. Clean planes. Clear landmarks. Facial expression anatomy becomes easier to teach when you can see how these thin muscles interdigitate at the modiolus and blend with regional fascia rather than inserting like typical limb muscles. This perspective also aligns with clinical surface anatomy used in facial trauma and reconstruction: the zygomaticus major and orbicularis oris relationships help explain oral commissure deviation, and the course of the sternocleidomastoid guides safe placement of incisions and interpretation of neck masses relative to cervical lymph node levels and the carotid sheath deep to it. Students often confuse bony origin sites on the zygoma and maxilla when learning muscle vectors. This view reduces that ambiguity.
