Description
Presented in standard anatomical position, the anterior body wall and limbs are dominated by the superficial muscles of the face and neck (frontalis, orbicularis oculi, zygomaticus, masseter, sternocleidomastoid) continuing inferiorly into pectoralis major and serratus anterior over the thoracic cage. Rectus abdominis with the linea alba sits medial to the external oblique, while deltoid caps the shoulder and transitions into biceps brachii and brachioradialis along the anterior arm and lateral forearm, with flexor compartment tendons approaching the wrist and palmar aponeurosis. In the pelvis and thigh, the anterior hip is defined by the iliopsoas region and tensor fasciae latae, and the quadriceps femoris group frames the patella (rectus femoris centrally, vastus medialis medially, vastus lateralis laterally) before narrowing into the patellar tendon to the tibial tuberosity, with tibialis anterior and the extensor tendons visible along the anterior leg and dorsum of the foot. Osseous landmarks such as the clavicles, sternum, costal margins, patellae, and aspects of the knee joint line cue muscle origins and insertions. This full-body anterior perspective is the workhorse view for correlating surface anatomy with function and common injury patterns, because it places major tendon-bearing regions in clear continuity from muscle belly to insertion. The quadriceps tendon, patella, and patellar ligament form a straight extensor mechanism that clinicians examine in suspected patellar tendinopathy or quadriceps rupture, and the anterior compartment of the leg highlights the structures implicated in acute compartment syndrome and foot drop from deep fibular (peroneal) nerve injury.
