Description
Rendered from a superior, slightly oblique perspective, the head and neck are presented with semi-transparent integument to expose the cranium, mandible, cervical vertebrae, and the clavicular heads at the root of the neck. Laterally, the temporalis fans over the temporal fossa and descends deep to the zygomatic arch toward the coronoid process, while the masseter lies more superficial on the ramus and angle of the mandible, bracketing the temporomandibular joint just anterior to the external acoustic meatus. Inferior to the mandible, the sternocleidomastoid runs obliquely from the mastoid process to the manubrium and medial clavicle, with the upper trapezius sweeping posterolaterally toward the nuchal line and acromial region. Orbicularis oculi, orbicularis oris, and the zygomaticus major and minor layer over the maxilla and zygomatic bone anteriorly. Clear landmarks. That TMJ–masticatory muscle relationship is the point of the view: you can track how temporalis and masseter generate elevation and excursion of the mandible while the joint sits in the temporal bone’s mandibular fossa. For clinicians, this anatomy underpins temporomandibular disorders, bruxism-related hypertrophy, and preauricular pain patterns, and it clarifies why TMJ arthrocentesis and arthroscopy target the joint space just anterior to the tragus while avoiding the facial nerve branches crossing the masseteric region. The sternocleidomastoid and clavicular heads also frame the surface anatomy used for central venous access and for understanding torticollis mechanics. Use this asset in gross anatomy and head and neck courses to teach layered relationships between facial expression muscles, mastication, and cervical stabilizers, or in dental and maxillofacial training materials to orient TMJ palpation and injection landmarks against the mandibular ramus and zygomatic arch.
