Description
Presented in anatomical position with the palm facing anteriorly, the upper limb is mapped from the axilla through the arm, cubital fossa, forearm, wrist, and into the digits. Superficial veins track in the subcutaneous tissue, with the cephalic vein running along the anterolateral forearm and arm toward the deltopectoral groove, while the basilic vein ascends on the anteromedial side before piercing deep fascia to join the brachial venae comitantes. Across the anterior elbow, the median cubital vein typically bridges cephalic and basilic systems over the bicipital aponeurosis, with paired deep veins accompanying the radial and ulnar arteries and converging proximally into the brachial vein. That antecubital convergence matters clinically. Venipuncture and peripheral IV access most often target the median cubital, cephalic, or basilic veins, and this view clarifies why the bicipital aponeurosis offers some protection to the brachial artery and median nerve during needle placement, while also showing where a high bifurcation or variant median antebrachial vein can change the safest entry point. Patterns of superficial venous drainage also guide interpretation of upper-extremity deep vein thrombosis and effort thrombosis (Paget-Schroetter) near the axillary-subclavian segment, where collateral pathways may become prominent. Use this plate in gross anatomy and surface anatomy teaching to connect palpable landmarks at the cubital fossa and wrist to named venous channels, and in nursing, phlebotomy, and simulation curricula for line-placement planning.
