Description
Within the lumen of the large intestine, the colorectal mucosa forms moist, pink longitudinal folds with a fine subepithelial vascular pattern visible beneath the surface. A protruding mucosal mass, consistent with an adenomatous polyp or early exophytic carcinoma, arises from the bowel wall and projects centrally into the intestinal channel, narrowing the available passage. Superficial mucosal irregularity and focal thickening suggest local invasion extending deep to the epithelium toward the submucosa, where lymphatics and venules provide an early route for spread. Orientation is endoluminal, approximating what a clinician sees during colonoscopy. Clinical relevance centers on the adenoma to carcinoma sequence and the endoscopic recognition of lesions that are still limited to the mucosa or superficial submucosa, when complete excision can be curative.
