Description
Viewed from the luminal side, the colonic mucosa appears erythematous and edematous, with shallow erosions interrupting the normally smooth surface between mucosal folds. Tortuous submucosal vessels lie just beneath a thin, mucus-coated epithelium, while irregular ridges suggest swollen plicae semilunares and early mucosal granularity. Lesions cluster along the surface rather than projecting as true polyps, consistent with inflammatory change rather than a neoplastic mass. Friable tissue. Such a magnified mucosal perspective mirrors what clinicians correlate with colonoscopy: loss of the usual vascular pattern, punctate bleeding, and superficial ulceration that can be sampled with targeted biopsy.
