Description
Arising from the styloid process of the temporal bone, the styloglossus is traced in an inferior perspective as its slender fibers course anteroinferiorly and medially toward the lateral aspect of the tongue. From below, the muscle sits lateral to the midline genioglossus and approaches the tongue base near the glossotonsillar sulcus, blending with intrinsic tongue musculature and the hyoglossus. The stylohyoid ligament lies in close proximity to its origin, and the relationship to the floor of mouth is evident. Fine architecture. Functionally, styloglossus retracts and elevates the tongue, a motion central to bolus propulsion and the oral phase of swallowing. This inferior view helps clarify where the muscle can be affected in tongue-base surgery and why edema or scarring in the posterolateral tongue may limit retraction, contributing to dysphagia or altered articulation. The orientation also mirrors the corridor encountered when working around the parapharyngeal space, where nearby neurovascular structures (including the hypoglossal nerve as it approaches the tongue) demand careful respect.
