Description
Centered within a front-facing adult female torso, the large intestine is isolated and highlighted from the ileocecal region in the right lower quadrant up to the cecum and ascending colon, across the transverse colon in the upper abdomen, and down the left side as the descending and sigmoid colon. The hepatic flexure sits superior to the right colic gutter, while the splenic flexure rises more superiorly under the left costal margin before the colon curves inferomedially into the pelvis. Peripheral haustra and the broad curvature of the colonic frame define its course around the centrally positioned small-bowel region. Anterior orientation matters for teaching surface anatomy and for correlating abdominal pain patterns with colonic segments, from right lower quadrant tenderness in acute appendicitis and cecal pathology to left lower quadrant pain in sigmoid diverticulitis. This perspective also supports preoperative planning concepts for colectomy, where mobilization follows the lateral peritoneal reflections (white line of Toldt) and vascular territories track with the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries at predictable segmental levels. A clear frame of the colon makes the flexures, common sites of angulation and obstruction, easy to localize. Simple landmarks.
