Description
Centered within an anterior standing figure, the large intestine is isolated and highlighted as it frames the abdominal cavity from the right iliac fossa to the left lower quadrant. The cecum and ascending colon run superiorly along the patient’s right lateral abdomen toward the hepatic (right colic) flexure, then the transverse colon crosses to the splenic (left colic) flexure. Descending colon courses inferiorly along the left flank into the sigmoid colon, which curves medially toward the midline pelvis; the rectum lies most inferiorly and posteriorly within the pelvic region. Orientation matters in the colon. This anterior pathway is the same map clinicians use when localizing abdominal pain, distension, or a palpable mass and when interpreting stool burden patterns on plain abdominal radiographs, where colonic haustra and segmental distribution help distinguish large bowel from small bowel. The relationship of the hepatic and splenic flexures to adjacent organs also underpins common sites of angulation or partial obstruction, and it clarifies why ischemic colitis often declares itself at watershed zones such as Griffith’s point near the splenic flexure.
