Description

Over an anterior torso view of an adult Asian woman, the large intestine is mapped within the abdominopelvic cavity from cecum to rectum. The ascending colon runs superiorly along the patient’s right lateral abdomen to the hepatic flexure beneath the liver, then the transverse colon crosses leftward across the upper abdomen toward the splenic flexure near the spleen. Inferiorly, the descending colon tracks down the left flank to the sigmoid colon, which curves medially into the pelvis before continuing as the rectum. Surface projection is the teaching point. Appreciating the colon’s segmental course on the body matters when you correlate pain, palpable masses, and procedure planning with likely pathology. Appendicitis-related inflammatory changes can localize near the cecum in the right iliac fossa, while diverticulitis most often involves the sigmoid colon in the left lower quadrant, a difference that often guides initial imaging and antibiotic decisions. The anterior relationship of the transverse colon to the stomach and small-bowel loops, and the retroperitoneal position of the ascending and descending colon, also frame how CT findings and surgical mobilization are interpreted. Orientation is everything. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and gastrointestinal blocks to teach colonic segments and flexures, in patient-facing materials that explain colonoscopy pathways and polypectomy, or in clinical education on abdominal examination and localization of lower GI symptoms. It also fits radiology primers that pair surface anatomy with axial CT. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
