Description
Anterior abdominal wall structures have been removed to place the large intestine in a female torso, with the cecum and ascending colon rising on the right side of the abdomen to the hepatic flexure, then continuing as the transverse colon across the upper abdomen. From the splenic flexure, the descending colon courses inferiorly along the left flank, transitioning into the sigmoid colon in the left lower quadrant before turning into the rectum in the posterior pelvis. A lateral (side) perspective clarifies the anteroposterior depth of these segments, with the transverse colon lying more anterior than the retroperitoneal ascending and descending portions. Mesenteric drape and pelvic curvature read cleanly. Spatial orientation of the colon matters when you are teaching peritoneal relationships and why some segments behave differently in disease and surgery. The fixed retroperitoneal position of the ascending and descending colon helps explain patterns of spread in colonic carcinoma and why mobilization along the white line of Toldt is a defining step in right and left hemicolectomy. This side view also supports discussion of volvulus, where the mobile sigmoid loop can rotate on its mesentery, and of constipation patterns influenced by colonic transit through the left colon and rectosigmoid junction. Landmarks are clear.
