Description
Centered within the abdominopelvic cavity, the colon forms its characteristic frame around the small intestine, beginning at the cecum in the right lower quadrant and continuing superiorly as the ascending colon to the right colic (hepatic) flexure. The transverse colon then crosses the upper abdomen to the left colic (splenic) flexure before descending along the left flank, narrowing into the sigmoid colon in the left lower quadrant and terminating as the rectum in the midline pelvis. Expect to see the major segments in proper continuity, with the rectum positioned posterior to the urinary bladder and uterus in a typical female arrangement. Clear topology matters. This anatomy underpins everyday interpretation of abdominal pain patterns and endoscopic navigation, since lesions and obstruction behave differently across the right colon, transverse colon, and left colon. The flexures are fixed turning points where colonoscopy can be technically challenging, and where volvulus is less common than in the sigmoid colon, a frequent site of torsion and diverticular disease. Surgical planning also depends on this segmental layout, because lymphatic drainage and arterial supply track along the superior and inferior mesenteric territories and guide oncologic resection margins.
