Description
Coronal section anatomy of the tongue is suggested by the title and keywords, with stratified squamous epithelium of the lingual mucosa draping over a papillary surface that includes filiform and fungiform papillae on the dorsal aspect and circumvallate papillae positioned more posteriorly. Within the epithelium, taste buds sit along the lateral walls of fungiform and circumvallate papillae, with ducts from serous lingual glands (von Ebner) opening into the trenches around circumvallate papillae. Deep to the lamina propria, interlacing bundles of intrinsic skeletal muscle run in longitudinal, transverse, and vertical planes, separated by connective tissue septa and variable adipose. Short fibers. On the ventral surface, a thinner mucosa and the lingual frenulum are expected at the midline, superficial to the genioglossus and adjacent to sublingual connective tissue. This cross-sectional layering matters when you need to explain why tongue lesions behave the way they do. Squamous cell carcinoma of the oral tongue often invades early into skeletal muscle and then tracks along lymphatic channels in the submucosa toward submandibular and deep cervical nodes, so appreciating mucosa-to-muscle continuity is more than a histology exercise. The same microanatomy anchors common teaching points: von Ebner gland secretion clears the circumvallate trenches, and loss of papillae and taste buds after radiation or nutritional deficiency has a structural correlate you can point to.
