Description
Seen in lateral profile, the female skull is rendered with the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital bones meeting at the coronal, squamous, and lambdoid sutures, with the zygomatic bone and maxilla forming the anterior midface and the mandible positioned inferiorly as the mobile lower jaw. Posterior to the mandibular ramus, the external acoustic meatus is visible within the temporal bone, while the nasal aperture and nasal cavity open anteriorly. Inferior to the occiput, the cervical spine continues in physiological lordosis, with the atlas (C1) supporting the skull at the atlanto-occipital joint and successive cervical vertebrae stacked caudally, their spinous processes projecting posteriorly. A lateral bony view like this is the cleanest way to teach cranial base relationships and the transition from skull to neck without the visual noise of bilateral overlap. It also maps directly onto everyday clinical problems: mandibular condylar fractures and temporomandibular joint derangement sit just anterior to the external acoustic meatus, and cervical alignment at C1 to C2 is a key checkpoint in trauma radiographs when assessing for atlantoaxial subluxation.
