Description
Frontal split anatomy pairs the external face with the underlying craniovertebral skeleton, so the frontal bone, paired parietals, nasal bones, zygomatic bones, maxilla, and mandible read clearly in anterior view. Within the midface, the orbits, piriform aperture, and maxillary dentition frame the nasal and oral regions, while the temporomandibular joint sits lateral to the mandibular ramus. Inferiorly, the occipital bone transitions to the upper cervical spine, with the atlas (C1) and axis (C2) aligned beneath the cranial base and the clavicle visible at the thoracic inlet. Left and right halves contrast hard tissue contour with overlying soft-tissue landmarks. For teaching surface anatomy, this half-face juxtaposition is hard to beat because bony relief explains what you palpate: the supraorbital margin, infraorbital rim, zygomatic arch, and mental protuberance. Dental orientation matters here. The relationship of the maxilla and mandible to the nasal aperture and orbit supports discussions of midface fractures (including zygomaticomaxillary complex injury) and why malocclusion or infraorbital nerve hypoesthesia can accompany trauma. Including C1 to C2 in the same axis also grounds head posture and atlantoaxial rotation, useful when introducing odontoid fractures and cervical immobilization.
