Description

Spanning the dorsum of the male foot, a network of dorsal tarsal ligaments bridges the talus and calcaneus posteriorly to the navicular, cuboid, and the medial, intermediate, and lateral cuneiforms in the midfoot, then continues distally toward the tarsometatarsal articulations. The distal tibia and fibula frame the talus at the talocrural joint, with dorsal capsular thickening evident across the ankle mortise. Medially and laterally, collateral ligament components flank the joint line while short, strap-like bands cross between adjacent tarsal bones. Small ligaments, tight spacing. A superior (dorsal) angle clarifies how the dorsal capsule and discrete dorsal intertarsal and tarsometatarsal ligaments constrain separation of the midfoot under load while still permitting the coupled motion needed for gait. This anatomy matters in midfoot sprain patterns, including Lisfranc injuries, where dorsal ligament disruption can appear subtle clinically yet produce instability between the medial cuneiform and the base of the second metatarsal. The same surface anatomy guides dorsal surgical approaches for tarsometatarsal fixation and helps explain why dorsal osteophytes or post-traumatic capsular thickening can limit ankle and midfoot dorsiflexion.
