Description
Base of a toe proximal phalanx dominates the frame, centered on the concave proximal articular facet that receives the head of the corresponding metatarsal at the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. Along the medial and lateral margins of the base, the cortical ridges and small tubercles mark the attachment zones for the collateral ligaments, while the plantar aspect forms a thicker lip where the plantar plate and flexor tendon sheath blend into the capsule. Dorsally, the surface transitions to a flatter area that supports the extensor expansion as it crosses the MTP joint. Bone relief is crisp. That proximal articular surface is where joint congruence is won or lost, and subtle changes in its curvature help explain why MTP instability or arthrosis can concentrate pain and osteophytes at the dorsal margin during push-off. Turf toe injuries commonly disrupt the plantar plate at the MTP joint, and this illustration makes it easy to correlate that plantar attachment zone with the base of the proximal phalanx where capsular thickening and small avulsion fragments may appear on radiographs or CT.
