Description
Shown from an anterior profile in an adult male, the rectum descends within the posterior pelvis and demonstrates its characteristic lateral rectal flexures, the transverse rectal folds (valves of Houston). These mucosal and submucosal folds project into the rectal lumen and create alternating right and left curvatures along the rectal wall. Superiorly, the rectum continues from the sigmoid colon, while inferiorly it approaches the anal canal, with the flexures positioned to influence the luminal axis rather than forming true sphincters. Orientation matters. Clinically, the valves of Houston are more than a textbook curiosity because they affect instrumentation and endoscopy, where the rectoscope or colonoscope must be advanced with an appreciation for the alternating lateral turns and the potential for mucosal trauma if forced against a fold.
