Seen from the anterior aspect, the ascending part of the duodenum (pars ascendens, D4) rises on the left side of the vertebral column after the horizontal (inferior) part, coursing superiorly toward the duodenojejunal flexure. Medially, it transitions into the jejunum at the level of the ligament of Treitz, while posterior relations typically include the abdominal aorta and left psoas major, with the peritoneal reflections framing an otherwise largely retroperitoneal segment. The proximal continuation from D3 and the distal handoff into the first jejunal loop define its short, steep trajectory. Short segment. Big landmark.
