Description
Posteriorly oriented, the heart is presented with the left atrium forming most of the base, flanked by the right atrium on the anatomical right. Superiorly, the pulmonary veins enter the left atrium, while the superior and inferior venae cavae align with the right atrium along the right border. Inferior and anterior to the atria, the left ventricle contributes to the diaphragmatic surface, with the right ventricle largely displaced toward the sternocostal aspect. The great arteries arise superiorly, their proximal roots visible at the base. Posterior perspective matters because it matches the operative and imaging geometry of the left atrium and pulmonary venous confluence. Catheter-based ablation for atrial fibrillation targets regions around the pulmonary vein ostia and the posterior left atrial wall, and this view clarifies why those structures sit immediately anterior to the esophagus, a practical constraint when delivering energy. Pericardial reflections around the venous inflow are also easier to teach from the back of the heart than from a classic anterior plate. Orientation becomes intuitive. Use this plate in gross anatomy and cardiothoracic modules when teaching cardiac chambers and venous return, or in electrophysiology lectures and procedure guides describing pulmonary vein isolation and posterior left atrial anatomy. It also supports radiology correlations for posterior cardiac contours on CT or MRI reconstructions and for intraoperative orientation during left atrial exposure.
