Description
Cutaneous anatomy is rendered as a 3D cross section through healthy integument, with the epidermis forming the superficial keratinized surface overlying a thicker dermis and a deep hypodermis composed of lobulated adipose tissue. Hair follicles descend from the epidermis into the dermis, their bulbs positioned deep and their shafts directed superficially, while sebaceous glands sit posterolateral to the follicular infundibulum and empty into the follicle. Coiled eccrine sweat glands occupy the deep dermis with ducts coursing superiorly to the surface, and red and blue vessels traverse the dermis and subcutaneous layer alongside yellow sensory nerve fibers. Spatially, the illustration clarifies what students often miss: the dermis is not a uniform slab but a vascular, innervated connective tissue compartment that cradles adnexal structures at different depths and orientations. That depth relationship matters in procedure planning, from achieving effective local anesthesia around cutaneous nerves to selecting a biopsy type when a suspected folliculitis, alopecia process, or adnexal tumor requires inclusion of the follicular bulb or sweat gland coils. The same anatomy underpins acne pathophysiology, where obstruction and inflammation at the folliculosebaceous unit occur adjacent to the sebaceous gland rather than at the skin surface.
