Description
Centered on the adult male anal opening, the outer anal canal is framed by perianal skin and the mucocutaneous junction (anoderm) at the anal verge. Inferiorly and superficially, the canal blends into the external anal sphincter, whose subcutaneous part encircles the distal canal and merges anteriorly with the perineal body and posteriorly toward the anococcygeal ligament. Lateral to the sphincter complex, the ischioanal fossae define the soft tissue corridors of the posterior perineum, while superior continuity is implied with the anorectal junction where the puborectalis sling turns the rectum forward into the anal canal.
