Description
Running along the superolateral convexity of the cerebral hemisphere, the vein of Trolard (superior anastomotic vein) courses within the superficial cerebral venous network over the parietal cortex, bridging lateral cortical veins toward the superior sagittal sinus near the midline. Adjacent gyri and sulci of the parietal lobe provide the surface relief that the vessel follows, with the vein’s caliber and arc often becoming more apparent as it approaches the parasagittal dura. Superior and medial to the lateral (Sylvian) fissure, it contrasts with the inferior anastomotic vein of Labbé, which trends posteroinferiorly toward the transverse sinus. Dural reflections and portions of the superior sagittal sinus are suggested by the meningeal covering at the cranial vertex. This venous channel matters because it is a major superficial collateral pathway between the middle cerebral venous territory and the superior sagittal sinus, and its dominance varies between individuals in a way that influences venous drainage patterns on angiography and during surgery. Injury or thrombosis involving cortical bridging veins near the parasagittal region can contribute to subdural hemorrhage and venous infarction, and the vein of Trolard is one of the named conduits surgeons actively avoid during frontoparietal craniotomy and dural opening.
