Description
Under high magnification, Streptococcus pneumoniae appears as paired cocci (diplococci) with a shallow central cleft separating adjacent hemispheres, and occasional short chains consistent with streptococci division in a single plane. Individual pneumococci present as ovoid to slightly lancet-shaped spheres, lying in close apposition with narrow intercellular gaps. A smooth external contour is evident around each cell, the kind of boundary often emphasized in SEM-based renderings of pneumococci. Morphology still matters in day-to-day microbiology. Diplococci with a capsule-forming phenotype point you toward pneumococcus in the differential for community-acquired pneumonia, acute otitis media, sinusitis, and invasive disease such as meningitis and sepsis. That capsule is the key virulence factor and the main target of opsonizing antibodies, so the “clean,” rounded cell margins in this sort of view map directly onto why asplenic or functionally hyposplenic patients are at higher risk and why vaccination strategy centers on capsular polysaccharides.
