Branching hyphal elements traverse the underlying substrate, and the conidia project outward from the mycelium rather than lying flush against the surface. Pigmentation is obvious. For mycology teaching, this morphology anchors identification within Pleosporales, where dematiaceous (melanized) molds produce multicelled conidia that can be mistaken for superficially similar genera if septation pattern and attachment are not clear.
