Description
Seen from an inferior perspective, the left lung base is oriented with the diaphragmatic surface facing the viewer, and the anteromedial basal segment is mapped on the lower lobe near the junction of the anterior and medial basal territories. Boundary lines demarcate the segment against adjacent basal segments, with the segment lying anteromedially relative to the posterolateral basal region and inferior to the oblique fissure. Medially, its contour approaches the mediastinal surface, while laterally it blends toward the costal surface at the lung base. Segmental anatomy matters when you are trying to correlate a focal opacity or consolidation with bronchopulmonary distribution rather than lobar labels alone, because the anteromedial basal segment follows the segmental bronchus and accompanying pulmonary arterial branch and does not always respect the visual cues of fissures on radiographs. On CT, dependent atelectasis, aspiration-related changes, and localized pneumonia often track into basal segments, and an inferior mental model helps when reviewing coronal reformats or when a lesion sits close to the diaphragmatic pleura. A practical planning view.
