Description
Posterior thoracic anatomy frames the colored inferior (basal, diaphragmatic) border of the left lung as it sweeps inferolaterally from the paravertebral region toward the costophrenic recess. Medially, the lung’s margo inferior approaches the vertebral column and posterior mediastinum, while laterally it descends along the inner surface of the ribs toward the midaxillary line. The depiction emphasizes where aerated lung ends inferiorly relative to the thoracic wall and spine. Clear termination. Surface projection of the inferior border matters when you teach pleural reflections and when you plan posterior thoracic procedures, because the pleura extends inferior to the lung and creates a target zone for thoracentesis above the rib while avoiding the intercostal neurovascular bundle. Clinicians often contrast the lung border (roughly to the level of the T10 spinous process posteriorly) with the pleural reflection (about two vertebral levels lower), a relationship that becomes concrete in a back view near the vertebral column. This is also the reference for interpreting basal atelectasis, small pleural effusions layering in the costodiaphragmatic recess, and diaphragmatic elevation, which can make the apparent lung base ride higher on imaging and exam.
