Description
Superior nasal concha (concha nasalis superior) appears as a delicate, scroll-like bony lamella projecting from the ethmoidal labyrinth on the superolateral wall of the nasal cavity. From an inferior perspective, its free margin is partly concealed by the larger inferior nasal concha positioned more inferiorly and laterally, leaving only a narrow portion of the superior turbinate visible above the intervening airway space. Medially, the conchal surface faces the nasal septum, while laterally it approaches the ethmoid bone and the attachments of the middle turbinate, emphasizing how compact this region is. Small structure. Tight space. Otolaryngology relies on this anatomy when planning endoscopic access to the posterior nasal cavity and skull base, because the superior turbinate marks the superior meatus and guides orientation toward the sphenoethmoidal recess and sphenoid sinus ostium. The relationship to the ethmoidal labyrinth matters in posterior ethmoidectomy and in avoiding inadvertent violation of adjacent thin bony partitions, where a few millimeters can separate the nasal airway from orbit and anterior cranial fossa. The inferior viewpoint is also useful for teaching why the superior turbinate is often less conspicuous on routine nasal examination, since the inferior nasal concha and the narrow nasal passage can obscure it even when the bony landmarks are intact. Rhinology educators can place this illustration into lectures on the lateral nasal wall, ethmoid bone anatomy, and turbinate nomenclature, and surgical authors can use it to support descriptions of endoscopic landmarks for sphenoidotomy or posterior ethmoid work.
