Description
Sectioned left heart anatomy is presented in a lateral perspective, opening the left atrium and left ventricle to expose the mitral (bicuspid) atrioventricular valve. The anterior and posterior mitral leaflets lie between the atrial chamber superiorly and the ventricular cavity inferiorly, their free margins tethered by chordae tendineae to the anterolateral and posteromedial papillary muscles arising from the ventricular wall. Trabeculae carneae contour the ventricular endocardium, while the fibrous mitral annulus frames the valve orifice along the atrioventricular junction. A tight spatial story. Papillary muscle geometry and chordal insertion matter because they explain competence under systolic load, and they also explain failure patterns you see in practice. Ischemia or infarction affecting the posteromedial papillary muscle (often a single coronary supply) can precipitate acute severe mitral regurgitation, while chronic left ventricular dilation displaces papillary muscles laterally and apically, tethering leaflets and producing functional regurgitation despite structurally normal cusps. Surgeons and echocardiographers think in this plane when correlating leaflet scallops, chordal rupture, and jet direction. Use this lateral section for teaching mitral valve apparatus anatomy in cardiology, cardiac surgery, and gross anatomy labs, and for figure plates in texts discussing mitral regurgitation mechanisms, papillary muscle rupture, and valve repair strategies such as annuloplasty and chordal replacement.
